“ […] I spoke with management several times. I haven’t been paid for a year. But money wasn’t the most important thing. The problem is respect. The problem is something I cannot accept…”
The coach of Guinea’s national basketball team, Nedeljko Neno Ašćerić, announced his resignation on Sunday, July 5, 2026, following Guinea’s 61-50 defeat to Tunisia. The announcement was made during the post-game press conference for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers, held in Angola.
The technician justified his decision by citing the “lack of respect” for the commitments made to him by the Guinean authorities.
Speaking to reporters, the coach assured them that his decision was not related to the defeat against Tunisia, but that it had been made several days prior.
“ I’ve decided to stop. I don’t want to continue with this situation, and this loss doesn’t matter. This decision isn’t dependent on the loss. Yesterday, I decided to stop. I had wanted to stop before leaving for Dakar to prepare for the match against Senegal. After that, I decided not to leave my team alone. I didn’t want to betray them. I wanted to help them one last time, and I wanted to finish with a victory. But that’s life ,” he said at a press conference.
Reflecting on the reasons for his departure, Nedeljko Neno Ašćerić spoke of a deep feeling of lack of consideration, despite his attachment to the national team.
“ I love my team and my players. But I say with pride and honor that I don’t want to be treated this way. I did my job honestly and responsibly. I spoke with management several times. I haven’t been paid for a year. But money wasn’t the most important thing. The problem is respect. The problem is something I cannot accept. I wasn’t happy with this situation, with the preparation, the organization. I can’t continue like this. There’s no reason to continue,” he fumed.
